Perhaps you're curious about what exactly defines the 'best person' for your skin cancer care. Right from the outset, your ideal preferences include:

  1. Being attended to by a medical doctor who either possesses extensive experience or is under the guidance of doctors with over a decade of specialized expertise in the comprehensive detection, diagnosis, monitoring, and management of skin cancer.

  2. Receiving care in a clinic equipped with state-of-the-art medical technologies, ensuring you receive the most advanced and reliable skin cancer advice and follow-up available.

  3. If necessary, having your pathology conducted by the most skilled and knowledgeable skin cancer pathologists in Sydney.

DR PENNY YELF

BSC (MED) MBBS (HONS)

Dr Penny Yelf brings almost a decade of hands-on experience as a skin cancer doctor.

During her early medical career she was passionate about finding her calling as a doctor and wanted to make a real difference to people’s lives. She worked in underprivileged areas of the Pacific Islands and rural Australia. She went on to a period of General Practice which gave her a holistic approach to patient care and in 2011 worked as a dermatology registrar at St Vincent’s Hospital and The Skin and Cancer Foundation in Darlinghurst.

Penny has published/presented work in the Australasian Journal of Dermatology and at the Australasian College of Dermatologists Annual Scientific Meeting 2012. Through her experiences Penny discovered her true passion was in Skin Cancer Medicine: “ It combines my love of caring for people confronted by cancer, the art and science of detecting a melanoma and the surgical excellence required to give the best cosmetic outcome.”

“When you work in skin cancer, you can save lives. Not that long ago, I had a dad in his 40s with young kids ring me and say he “owed me his life” because we found a cancer that had the potential to spread through his body and be life-threatening. That I get the chance to make that kind of impact each time I go to work is deeply satisfying.”

There were several reasons why Dr Yelf chose to join the NBSCC team. She wanted;

  • To be part of a skin cancer medical check team that really cares about their patients, as well as the practice of good medicine. This care is shown through the amount of time routinely assigned to each patient appointment and the thoroughness of the checks conducted – making sure there is enough time to cover every inch of skin to detect any potential skin cancer.

  • Access to the latest cutting edge technology that makes tracking even the most subtle changes in skin lesions over time possible and hence preventing many unnecessary surgical procedures.

  • To maintain her working relationship with one of Sydney’s best skin cancer pathologists, Dr Simon Clark from Douglass Hanly Moir/Sonic Healthcare.

Penny is a valued member of the Skin Cancer College of Australasia

DR YELF IS AVAILABLE: Wednesdays and Thursdays from 8 am to 3 pm.
